There is a version of you that still gets to be the person who could have done it.
That version is the one you are protecting. Not the plan. Not the timing. Not the resources. The version of yourself that still gets to be the person who would have built the thing, started the business, taken the role, written the book, made the move, if only the conditions had been right.
The conditions are not going to be right. They were never going to be right. The conditions are not the point.
The point is that the minute you decide, the could-have-been version disappears. In her place is a verdict. Not on the plan. On you.
That trade, identity for verdict, is the trade most people will not make. They will not say it that way, because saying it that way is uncomfortable. They will say they are waiting for the right time, or for the plan to be more complete, or for a sign. What they are actually doing is protecting the version of themselves that has not been measured yet.
A note on scale. This post is about the big-shape decisions. The launch, the leap, the leaving, the starting. The decisions that, when you imagine the version of your life on the other side of them, look meaningfully different from the one you are in now. Smaller decisions have their own mechanics. The identity protection underneath the big ones is what this is about.
Why the Almost-There Version Feels Safer
The almost-there version is the most generous interpretation of yourself you have ever been allowed to hold.
She is talented but underutilized. She is gifted but constrained. She is brilliant but the world has not seen it yet. The reason she is so compelling is that she has never been tested. Every plan she has made is still theoretical, which means every plan is still working. Every potential is still potential, which means every potential is still infinite.
For some readers, she is also load-bearing in a way the generic version of this concept does not capture. If you are a woman, especially a Black woman, especially in an environment that has been telling you who you can become since you were the only one in the room, the almost-there version has been doing extra work. You have already received unofficial verdicts that had nothing to do with your performance. You have already learned that acting decisively gets read differently when you are the one doing it. Some of what looks like stalling is actually rational caution that calcified into a habit a long time ago.
You have been protecting yourself for good reasons. That protection has been keeping you safe. It has also, at some point, started keeping you small. The question is whether you can tell the difference anymore.
Most people would rather keep that version than swap her for a smaller, more specific one. The one who tried the thing. The one with actual results. That version has fewer options, less mystery, and a story that has now been written. The almost-there version is still being written. Possibility is what is being protected, and possibility is more flattering than any specific outcome usually turns out to be.
The Verdict You Are Avoiding
Decisions force two verdicts. One on the work, one on the worker.
The verdict on the work is the one everyone talks about. Did the launch succeed. Did the role suit you. Did the book sell. Did the move pay off. Those are the verdicts you brace for, prepare for, write the contingency plans for.
The verdict on the worker is the one nobody mentions. That verdict says something about you, not about the work. It says you were capable of the thing or you were not. It says the talent your friends have been telling you about is real or it is a kind story you have been telling yourselves together. It says you have what you thought you had.
Most people are not avoiding the verdict on the work. They are avoiding the verdict on the worker.
The work is recoverable. You can run another launch, take another role, write another book, make another move. The worker verdict is the one that lands inside you and changes how you walk into the next room. That is the one with permanent weight.
So you stay in the planning phase, where no verdict can be issued. You optimize. You research. You wait for the conditions. You tell people you are still figuring it out. You buy yourself another year of being the woman who is about to.
What This Looks Like From the Outside
The people closest to you have seen this loop before. They are not telling you.
They are not telling you because they love you and they do not want to embarrass you. They are also not telling you because they have their own versions of this loop and they are not eager to look at it themselves. The loop is socially invisible because everyone is running their own.
But if you asked a friend who knew you well, who was honest with you, and who had nothing to lose, they would say something like this. I have heard about this plan for a while now. I do not know if it is the right plan. But I notice you keep refining it instead of starting it. And I notice that the longer you are not doing it, the more reasons you find that this is not the right time. Is it possible you do not want to do this, and you are using the conditions as cover? Or is it possible you do want to do it, and you are afraid of what it would say about you to find out?
That is a friendship question. It is also the only one that breaks the loop.
What Choosing Looks Like
You will not be ready in the way the almost-there version of you is waiting to feel.
She is waiting for a feeling that signals you are now safe to act. That feeling is not coming. It does not exist. The leaders I have watched move out of long-term planning purgatory describe the decision moment the same way: they did not feel ready, they were tired of not deciding, and they made the call anyway.
The verdict on the worker is going to come eventually. Either it comes through action and you find out who you are by doing the thing. Or it comes through avoidance and you find out who you are by watching yourself avoid it for years. Both are verdicts. Only one of them gives you the chance to learn anything.
